All academic programs (biology, environmental science, health science, and outdoor education) in the Department of Environmental and Health Sciences immerse students in content-rich curricula through active engagement in inquiry, analysis, and practical applications. Across the disciplines in our department, emphasis is placed on development of critical thinking skills; laboratory and field-based problem solving skills; scientific and general writing; library and Internet research; and teamwork. Students engage in experiential, active learning through laboratory research, clinical studies, and field work. The internship program places students in local government, business, and educational organizations. These are invaluable assets for providing students with the training and skills needed for productive employment.
We are located in the Sterling Mountain range of the northern Green Mountains. This location provides numerous opportunities for fieldwork and outdoor activities.
The Johnson State College community
believes in the power of higher education to transform
lives. We express this commitment through an education that
crosses academic and other boundaries, wherever possible;
creates opportunities for students to extend their classroom
learning to the field, the laboratory, the studio, the
community, and the local and wider world; recognizes the
diverse starting points and goals of students; and sustains
active participation, high standards, vigorous debate, and
mutual respect.
